Western Massachusetts:
DCR has opened these forests to ORV use in partnership with the Berkshire Trails Council, who have agreed to assist with the management and maintenance of ORV trails. For more info call DCR Region 5 headquarters at 413-442-8928.
For many of our Western Massachusetts rides, members who use MASS PIKE often meet at the Blandford Service Plaza.
Savoy Mountain State Forest (Savoy, Florida) - Savoy Mountain State Forest is closed to ORVs. We lost approximately 32 miles of ORV trails and old logging roads suitable for motorcycles and ATVs in this remote, high elevation area because no club was able to perform the necessary and required trail maintenance!!!
Pittsfield State Forest (Pittsfield, Hancock) - Approximately 45 miles of ORV trails and old logging roads suitable for motorcycles and ATVs along the Taconic Range on the Massachusetts/New York border. Phone: 413-442-8992. Directions: Mass Pike to exit 2, Rt 20 west toward New York, follow signs.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There is no longer any OHV parking at the Lulu Cascade (picnic area) parking lot. Park at BALANCE ROCK -- Continue on Church Street to the end, turn RIGHT and continue to end, turn LEFT to gates, and follow signs for OHV parking.
October Mountain State Forest (Lee, Lenox, Washington, Becket) - Approximately 30 miles of ORV trails and old logging roads suitable for motorcycles and ATVs in the highlands of the central Berkshires. Phone: 413-243-1778. Directions: Take Mass Pike to exit 3, Westfield, follow Rt 20 west to Rt 8 north, follow signs. Alternatively, Mass Pike to exit 2, Rt 20 west toward Lee, right on Central St, follow signs. Many members meet at the Blandford Plaza on Mass Pike. Meet at Four Corners parking area.
Beartown State Forest (Lee, Great Barrington, Monterey) - Approximately 25 miles of ORV trails and old logging roads suitable for motorcycles and ATVs in the southern Berkshires. Phone: 413-528-0904. Directions: Mass Pike to exit 2, Rt 20 east, Rt 102 west, Rt 7 south, Rt 23 east, left on Blue Hill Rd, follow signs. Park at the ORV parking area.
Tolland State Forest (Tolland, Sandisfield, Otis) - Approximately 15 miles of ORV trails and old logging roads suitable for motorcycles and ATVs near the Otis Reservoir. Phone: 413-269-6002. Directions: Mass Pike to exit 3, Rt 10/102 south, Rt 20 west, Rt 23 west (ignore all state forest signs), to Rt 8 south (ignore all state forest signs) to the large parking area on left, beside the river.
Southeastern Massachusetts:

Freetown-Fall River State Forest (Freetown, Fall River) - Approximately 25 miles of singletrack trails suitable for motorcycles (no ATVs). Many trails are extremely rocky, "expert" level riding. Phone: 508-644-5522. Directions: Rt 24 south to exit 10, bear left onto South Main St, ORV parking lot is 1.5 miles on right.
F. Gilbert Hills State Forest (Foxboro, Wrentham, Franklin) - Approximately an 8 mile loop of singletrack trail suitable for motorcycles (no ATVs). Additional trails may be available at Wrentham and Franklin satellite areas. Phone: 508-543-5850. Directions: I-95 south, Rt 140 north, 3/4 around Foxboro common, bear right on South St, right on Mills St, follow signs.
Northeastern Massachusetts:
Georgetown-Rowley Sate Forest (Georgetown, Rowley) - Georgetown-Rowley State Forest is closed to ORVs. We lost approximately 5 miles of ORV trails and abandoned roads in this small, quiet forest straddling I-95 because the area did not pass DCR's criteria for ORV use!!!
DCR Policy and Regulations:
Motorized Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) use is permitted in the State Forests and Parks under the following conditions:
1. ORV use is permitted only within the 8 State Forest management areas listed above.
2. ORV use is permitted only on specifically marked and designated ORV trails within the 8 State Forests. Designated ORV trails will be marked with trailhead signage and/or yellow or orange trail blazes.
3. ORV use is permitted only during the riding beginning no earlier than May 1st and ending no later than November 30th each year.
4. ORVs must be currently registered in Massachusetts under MGL c. 90 or MGL c. 90B.
